Delivery of prescribed amount of oxygen through a mask.
Objectives:
– Improve the patient’s respiratory status. – Prevent injury to the patient due to ventilatory deficit.
Equipment:
See oxygen therapy management equipment.
Material:
– See oxygen therapy management material. – Vaseline. – Neutral soap. – Disposable paper towels. – Nursing records.
Procedure:
– Follow general rules in the handling of oxygen therapy. – Choose the correct mask size for the patient. – Apply vaseline around the mouth to avoid irritation. – Place the mask over the patient’s nose and mouth, adjust it avoiding excessive pressure. – Avoid oxygen leakage to the eyes to prevent possible conjunctivitis. – Clean the mask with soapy water every 8 hours and when necessary. – Dry the mask with wipes. -Watch the pressure areas (mouth, cheekbones, and ears). Avoid skin lesions by protecting the ears with gauze. – Record in nursing documentation: procedure, reason, oxygen concentration, volume, incidents and patient response.
