Control of gastric aspirates


Measurement of gastric contents.

Objective:

– To quantify gastric contents. – To observe and assess the characteristics of the aspirated product.

Equipment:

– Graduated container. – Kocher forceps.

Material:

– Non-sterile disposable gloves. – Aspirate collection bag. – Nursing records.

Procedure:

– Perform hand washing. – Preserve the patient’s privacy. – Inform the patient. – Ask the patient and family to cooperate. – Put on gloves. – Clamp the nasogastric tube. – Disconnect the collection bag. – Insert new collection bag. – Unclamp the nasogastric tube. – Make sure to fix the tube to the patient’s bed, allowing the patient’s comfort. – Remove the material. – Remove gloves. – Wash hands. – Note date and time of start and end of monitoring and amount of fluid drained.
